Edinburgh is home to a number of renowned festivals throughout the year and especially in August.
Edinburgh International Science Festival
25th March to 5th April
2008:
A feast for families - so much to see and even more to do.
If you have kids between 3 and 13, don't miss the International Science Festival held around Easter each year. Activities and events for families all over Edinburgh and beyond.
Children's International Theatre Festival
27th May to 2nd June 2008:
Held in May each year, the Festival presents theatrical productions and workshops for 3 to 14 year olds over 7 days — more than enough to keep the family entertained.
The Edinburgh Jazz & Blues Festival
25th July to 3rd August
2008:
With venues throughout Edinburgh, including the now famous Spiegeltent, you can experience live jazz and blues music at its best with international performers and a great atmosphere.
The Edinburgh Military Tattoo
1st to 23rd August 2008:
The world's most spectacular show and an experience never forgotten. As twilight turns to nightfall, a hushed audience on the Esplanade watches the floodlit Edinburgh Castle and waits expectantly for the ancient gates to swing open and the rousing pipes and drums to swell the air as the massed bands march over the drawbridge. The magical spectacle of the
Edinburgh Military Tattoo never fails to enthrall.
Edinburgh Festival Fringe
3rd to 25th August 2008:
Perhaps the most famous festival in the world, the Fringe gives hundreds of new theatrical, comedy, dance and musical performers the chance to display their skills in a wide variety of venues.
The city comes alive with street performances including mime, music, acrobats and fire-eaters.
The International Book Festival
9th to 25th August 2008:
The world's largest celebration of the written word and an opportunity to hear authors discuss their own work and answer your questions.
The Edinburgh International Festival

The Edinburgh International Film Festival
18th to 29th June 2008:

Mela Festival
1st to 2nd September 2008:
An intercultural festival with a dazzling display of international and local talent. Savour tastes from across the globe at the many food stalls, enjoy dance, theatre and an array of musical styles.
